the german lanaguage?

November 29, 2008 by · 8 Comments

i’m an 18 year old who first experienced traveling and touring at age 16. i spent two months in france and learned the language very well..and quick..i then went to italy, hated the language, i went to luxembourg, too much of a confusion with luxembourgoise, german and french, so gave up on that..earlier this year i went to germany for two weeks and OMG the language was a disaster..the only thing i learned were bad words..like seriously..fall of 08 i will bea freshman in college and planning on taking german..all the people doign the registration for me just gave me the eyes and look that said, seriously? why? is german that hard? will i never learn it? the only languages spoken in my family are khmer, french and english! how will i practice my german? germans, can i please have a view? is it worth taking german? or shouldi just drop it?

German is a wonderful language (well, I’m native). If you took French, German will be easy for you. Four cases, verbs and nouns do flex, and all the tenses and irregularities will be much like in French. You might encounter gender problems, as German has three of them, male, female, and neuter. But don’t be too much afraid of that: Even if you ask something like “Wohin kann ich nach das Bahnhof gehen?”, which is really bad German, everybody will understand and show you the direction.

[The correct phrase would be: "Wo geht es hier zum Bahnhof?"]

please help me and no art school, we have Royal University of Fine here, but they focus on Traditional and Ancient Khmer art.
sorry my english not good

Practice! The easiest way to practice drawing people is to start by drawing from drawings (Leonardo da Vinci's line drawings and sketches of people might be a good place to start), so you can see how other artists manage to represent 3D people on a 2D surface using just a few lines. Once you are comfortable with techniques, start drawing simple objects from life, like an apple. Check to see how other artists make a few pencil strokes on a piece of paper look like a solid spherical apple. My old art teacher told me that once you can draw a life-like apple, you can draw anything =)

Jacquesh, at the largest agency I ever worked at there were 5 art directors and numerous graphic designers, and I was the ONLY one who could draw. Illustration is not synonymous with graphic design. Just because your handwriting is appalling, for example, it doesn't mean that you can't design a fabulous magazine page layout. And just because you are excellent at drawing it doesn't mean that you will ever be a good graphic designer.

Art

Practice. Then practice more.

Other then that, search around online for different techniques and styles of sketch work. There is a difference in the skills you use to sketch people and the skills you use to sketch a still life or landscape.

As far as the people – and I personally have never liked sketching people – keep in mind that each part of the body has a shape. Most of the parts of the body, the shapes are going to end up being oval to some degree. Start with that basic shape to get the size, scale and basic postition, then add more detail in. It takes time, and, as said above, practice.

Essay intro help please–Is this strong enough to get me into a university??

November 16, 2008 by · 2 Comments

Topic:
Discuss how your family's experience or cultural history enriched you or presented you with opportunities or challenges in pursuing your educational goals.

Intro:
The most important lesson I’ve learned was never intentionally taught. It was a lifestyle that was put upon me while I was growing up. My parents emigrated from Cambodia to America to escape the Khmer Rouge. They depend on me as much as I depend on them because they are not able to speak and read English very well. As a result, they have made it difficult for me to seek help from them regarding my school work simply because I know that they cannot help me.

i know the topic is a bit implicit– Had only the teacher to help me learn in my academics

please help and advise to make it stronger, i really want to get accepted.

Try fleshing out your essay more. In what ways do you depend on them for your education? Has their inability to speak English had any positive effects on your education? If so, what? How does your background influence your perspective of education?

Why the discrimination against all other foreign languages that aren't Spanish?

November 11, 2008 by · 7 Comments

What's so special about Spanish that it's the only other language on our phone systems (you know, "Para español, oprima numero dos")? It's only the fourth most widely spoken language in the world. Mandarin Chinese is the most widely spoken language on our planet (850 million native speakers). Hindi is second, English is third. Shouldn't we have Mandarin and Hindi in our systems too?

In the US, especially California, there's quite a large number of Korean, Japanese, Tagalog, Vietnamese, Khmer and Armenian speakers. Where's their number?

There are well over 500 languages on our planet. Since we can't put every single one into our phone system, and since we can't discriminate against any other minority foreign languages, like Swahili or Uzbekistani, there's an easier solution… everyone learns English! No favoritism toward one language or another. We've been using English since this country began, and we should be using English today, 230 years later.
BTW, before any of you criticize me as a stupid English-only American, I do happen to speak French quite fluently (7 1/2 yrs of study), a little Italian (2 1/2 yrs of study) and am currently learning Korean (my native language). I will one day also know Hawaiian, Portuguese and Flemish. For those of you who are mathematically-challenged, that's SIX foreign languages that I will eventually know. Is it too much to ask of all the Latinos that come here to eventually learn ONE foreign language?

well, if the others like the French, Koreans, Vietnamese, Swahili, and Uzbekistanis would get a lobby and a following, perhaps they would also get a number on the caller response automata.

There is no market, except that in the Northeast (because of proximity to Canada), there are occasional systems with French Prompts.

However, you may be pleased to know, that the Japanese are adding Korean to the list of languages used for transliterating subway and train station signs. (No translating, that would be too easy).

Of course, if you go to Spain, you would be hard pressed to find anyone who thinks that the languages spoken on this side of the Atlantic are even Spanish!

In California, where there are 37 million people, more than 1/3 are Hispanic. Only 12 % are Asian, and the Asian population includes 39 distinct ethnic groups who identify themselves as Asian, not Pacific Islander. (Cit: US Encyclopedia of Public Health, US Pop. Data, 2005, Census Bureau).

So, you feel that where 13 million Spanish speakers live, along with another 22 million English speakers, you want to claim discrimination because the approximately 1 million Koreans don't get a fair shake from the telemarketing companies?

I speak 3 other languages, and I don't think it's discrimination, it's market forces and the dominant culture.

Please note that Chinese and the Hindis aren't part of the dominant culture here.

Just wanted to get that off my chest, thanks.

I would like to start a non-profit organization to help kids in Cambodia. Any idea?

November 10, 2008 by · 8 Comments

I want kids in the countryside to get the opportunity to learn how to read and write and explore the modern world like the rest of the kids in America. I hope to find other Khmer from different part of the world to either go back home volunteer or donate money and help people in their home town or their parents home town. With our small population I believe it very possible to get Cambodia back on track in a shorter time frame then other courtries with larger population.

Contact Brad Pitt's wife. She should be able to help you.
